The Shawnee State Women's Soccer Team opened the 2011 season with a 3-1 win over Bluefield College on Saturday afternoon.
Bluefield College struck early with a goal by Braley Friere just minutes into the game. The Rams looked to control the game early, until the Bears' knotted the game at the 11:44 mark of the game and shifted the momentum. Junior Staci Johnson tied the game, 1-1, as she scored Shawnee's first goal of the contest off of a corner kick by freshman Lindsey Anstatt. With 11:36 remaining in the first half, Shawnee State's senior Emmy Kennedy took advantage of a penalty kick to give the Bears' the 2-1 advantage leading into the half.
Shawnee State controlled the second half and extended their lead. Freshman Allison Nagle tallied her first goal of the season on an assist by Staci Johnson in the 55th minute of action.
Shawnee State outshot the Rams 23-13 in the game and 11-6 with shots on goal.
Freshman Emily Kuehn got the start for the Bears and played in goal the 1st half, tallying five saves.
For the Rams, Tracy Muncy recorded eight saves in the contest.
Shawnee State returns to action on Tuesday, August 30th as they host Cincinnati Christian in a non-conference game. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Shawnee Turf.
