Shawnee State dominates on day one of Daytona Beach Classic

Shawnee State put on a dominating display to open up the Daytona Beach Classic, Monday afternoon, 91-68. With the win the Bears go to 11-2 for the year and Oklahoma Christian falls to 5-5 overall.

Senior Abby Ballman led the way for the Bears scoring a commanding 26 points in the game, while junior Alex Pohl set a new career-high adding another 25 points to the Shawnee State win.

Just 23 seconds in the game Ballman drained a three-pointer to give the Bears the first lead on the game, something they would never gave up throughout the course of the game. Shawnee continued to build on their lead nailing shot after shot until a lay-up by freshman Erin Dailey capped off the Bears largest lead of the first half at 19 points with 8:31 left in the half. Oklahoma Christian tried its best to cut the deficit, slowly chipping away at the Shawnee lead, and managed to close out the half down by 10 points, 47-37.

The Bears struck first in the second half with a lay-up by junior Catrice Mitchell. Late in the seventh minute of the second half, a pair of free throws from sophomore Alannah Sheets returned Shawnee's lead to the 19 point mark, but the Bears weren't done there. Freshman Kassidy Hardgrove, knocked down a three-pointer to start the lead climb for the Bears which reached up to 25 points at its highest.

Shawnee State shot for 46.9% from the field and 45.8% from behind the arc.

The Bears will return to action in day two of the Daytona Beach Classic against Peru State College. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
