The Shawnee State Women's Basketball Team opened conference action with a 83-57 win at UVa-Wise on Saturday afternoon. Shawnee State improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Mid-South Conference.
Shawnee State opened the game with a 4-0 run and never trailed the entire game, quickly building a double-digit lead 16-6 just over five minutes into the game. The Bears led by as many as 23 in the first half en route to a 45-26 lead at the break, behind sophomore Alannah Sheets' 16 point first half performance.
The Bears continued their dominance in the second half, as 10 different Shawnee State players scored in the win. Four starters reached double digit points, but a major factor in the game was that the Bears' bench outscored their opponents 25-15 in the contest.
Sheets finished the game leading all scorers with career-high 24 points. Junior Catrice Mitchell scored 15 points, while junior Alex Pohl and sophomore Tabby McKinney each added 10 points. McKinney pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and three assists. Senior Abby Ballman added nine points and dished out six assists in the win.
Shawnee State shot 43% from the field, going 30-for-70, while UVa-Wise shot 34%, making 18-of-53 attempts. The Bears made 11-of-29 attempts from beyond the arc for 38%. The Cavaliers shot a dismal 15% as they only made 2-of-13 3-pointers. At the line, Shawnee State finished 12-for-19 for 63%. UVa-Wise converted 19-of-32 attempts for 59%.
Shawnee State travels to the University of Pikeville on Monday evening for a conference doubleheader. The women's game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 8:00 p.m.
