Shawnee cruises past Pikeville

The Shawnee State Volleyball Team cruised past conference opponent Pikeville in three straight sets on Friday evening. The Bears swept Pikeville by scores of 25-18, 25-10, 25-10. Shawnee State improves to 10-18 on the season and 4-4 in Mid-South play. Pikeville falls to 7-20 overall and 0-10 in conference action.

After committing eight errors (four at the net) in the first set, Shawnee State settled down in the final sets and tallied a .400 hitting percentage in the game. In the opening set, the Bears led by as many as eight en route to a 25-18 win.

Shawnee State never trailed in the second set. Pikeville tied the set only once at 1-1, but the Bears went on a 16-3 run to capture their largest lead of 17-4. The Bears didn't commit an error at the net, tallying 19 kills in 35 attempts for a .543 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelsey Bielanow slammed down six kills in seven attempts, while senior Shaye Berry tallied four kills in six attempts in the set at help the Bears to a 25-10 victory.

Bielanow led the Bears in the final set with five kills in seven attempts as they Bears down Pikeville 25-10. Shawnee State committed only one error at the net, tallying a .500 hitting percentage.

Bielanow finished the night with 12 kills with only one error, while junior Holley Tobias accumulated 10 kills in the match. Berry added seven kills without committing an error at the net and junior Janine Grey and sophomore Hannah Gephart each added five kills apiece. Gephart dished out 31 assists in the win. Sophomore Kirsti Yates tallied 15 digs and three service aces for the Bears.

Shawnee State hosts Campbellsville on Saturday, October 22 as part of Volleyball Alumni Weekend. The game is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
