Bears derailed by Campbellsville

After winning the first set, 25-16, the Shawnee State Volleyball Team lost the next three sets to Campbellsville 25-22, 25-21, 25-23, to fall to the Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Shawnee State goes to 10-20 on the season and 4-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville improves their record to 18-11 overall and 8-1 in the MSC.

Shawnee State looked impressive early and controlled the first set. The Bears took their first lead at 8-7 on a kill by senior Shaye Berry and a Tiger error extended the Bears lead to 9-7. Campbellsville scored two unanswered points to tie the game at 9-9. Shawnee State extended the lead to 12-9 as sophomore Hannah Gephart dumped the ball over on two for a kill and junior Alex Pohl had back-to-back kills. A Campbellsville error gave the Bears the 13-9 lead. The two teams exchanged points and Campbellsville pulled within 18-16 of the Bears before a Bears' sideout brought sophomore Carly Mazza to serve for the Bears. With Mazza serving the Bears ended the set on a 6-0 run to win, 25-16. Berry, Pohl and junior Janine Grey combined for 10 of the Bears' 15 kills in the opening set.

In the second set the two teams battled back-and-forth early, tallying two lead changes and eight ties. A kill by Pohl tied the game at 9-9, but Campbellsville rallied on a 4-0 run and never trailed the rest of the set en route to a 25-22 victory.

The third set, saw the Tigers capturing the lead early and never trailing the rest of the set. Campbellsville led by as many as six, 18-12, in the set as they won 25-21 to take a 2-1 advantage over the Bears.

Campbellsville continued their dominance and never trailed in the final set. The Bears rallied back to tie the game at 17-17, but four straight points by the Tigers gave them a cushion at 21-17. After exchanging points, Down 24-21 Shawnee State made a rally but it was too late as Campbellsville's Genevieve Collette ended the match with a kill, giving the Tigers the 25-23 win and the match.

Berry and Grey both had stellar games at the net. Berry led the Bears with 13 kills with no errors, while Grey added 11 kills with only one error in the match, hitting .500 at the net. Pohl added nine kills, while junior Holly Tobias added eight. Sophomore Hannah Gephart dished out 39 assists in the match to go along with 15 digs. Sophomore Kirsti Yates led the defense with 24 digs, while Mazza and junior Jessica Winkelman added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Shawnee State travels to Rio Grande on Monday, October 24 for a Mid-South Conference East showdown. The two teams battled for the East Division Championship with the game beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Rio Grande.
