No. 3 RedStorm too much for Bears

The Shawnee State Men's Soccer Team fell to No. 3 Rio Grande RedStorm 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Shawnee State goes to 7-7-1 on the season and 2-3 in conference action. Rio Grande improves to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the MSC.

The RedStorm controlled the game from the start, despite the damp and dreary weather conditions. The experienced and disciplined squad out shot the Bears 15-3 in shots on goal. Rio got on the board as Joel Theissen found Mike Torbert in the 24th minute. Two minutes later, Mike DeFonte scored again for the RedStorm on an assist by Richard Isberner. Isberner connected with Scott Bibby in the final minute of the first half to give Rio Grande the 3-0 advantage at the break.

In the second half, it was more of Isberner. He found the back of the net for the RedStorm in the 58th minute on an assist from Rafael Maccauro. Isberner then assisted the RedStorm's final goal of the game as Dylan Williams scored in the 65th minute of play.

SSU's senior Kevin Fischer tallied eight saves in the loss. Rio's Jack Marchant recorded two saves in the win.

Shawnee State travels to St. Catharine for a conference doubleheader on Saturday. The women's game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. with the men's to follow at 4:00 p.m.
