Phil Blau

Phil Blau earned his BA in mathematics BA in Mathematics at Binghamton University and received his MS and Ph.D. in that discipline from the University of Massachusetts.

After 4 years teaching at Boston University’s College of General Studies, he has been at Shawnee State University since 2000, where he is currently a Professor of Mathematical Sciences as well as department chairperson. He been the Faculty Athletic Representative since 2004. He is proud to have worked closely with the athletic department to support student athletes and improve the eligibility certification process. 

Phil served as the Director of the General Education Program for over a decade. He has served as the representative from the Ohio Section to the Congress of the Mathematical Association of America and is currently serving as an associate editor of Convergence, an online journal published by that association.  His service for the Ohio Section included a term as President, membership on the Program Committee, and other committee service. Phil also oversaw the local arrangements for the 2007 Spring Meeting at Shawnee State.

Prior to his involvement with the Ohio Section, he co-chaired the Program Committee for a meeting of the Northeastern Section. He has been involved in the Ohio Mathematics Initiative, a collaborative project between math instructors at the state’s public colleges and university and Ohio high schools, since its creation in 2014, serving on the Subgroup for Communication, Outreach, and Engagement. 

Phil is humbled to have been recognized with the SSU Board of Trustees Distinguished Teaching Award, the Ralph Kavanaugh Home Team Award (which recognizes service, spirit, and loyalty to SSU Athletics), the 2019-20 Faculty Athletic Representative of the Year from the Mid-South Conference, and inclusion on the 2017-18 Mid-South All Conference Faculty Team.
