SALEM, W. Va. -- Shawnee State (5-8, 0-1) defeated Salem, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
Set 1
Behind kills by
Kaylee McInnis,
Bree Hicks and
Katelynn Boerger, Shawnee State jumped out to a 6-3 lead to begin the match.
From that moment on, neither team held a lead larger than two points until Shawnee State led 17-14.
Leading 22-19, the Bears scored three of the final four points, highlighted by kills from Hicks and
Camille Hall, to win the set, 25-20.
Set 2
The second set began evenly played, with neither team holding an advantage larger than one point, until Salem 5-1 run to lead, 11-7.
The Tigers scored six of the following eight points to lead 17-9.
Despite a rally from Shawnee State that closed Salem's lead to 21-18, the Tigers closed the frame on a 4-0 run to win, 25-18, and tie the match, 1-1.
Set 3
Shawnee State led Salem 10-5 to begin the third, before Salem rallied to tie the match, 12-12.
Tailing 15-14, Shawnee State went on a 5-0 run behind two kills from
Natalie Reida and an ace from
Cally Carpenter to take a 19-15 lead.
Salem rallied to cut the Bears' lead to 22-20, however, Shawnee State scored three of the set's final four points to win, 25-21, and take a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4
Salem jumped out to a 5-1 lead to begin the fourth set and maintained its advantage through the middle of the frame, leading 12-8.
The Bears scored four straight points, highlighted by kills from Hall and
Camille McIntosh, and an ace by
Mylee Gleim, to tie the match, 12-12.
With the frame tied at 20-20, Shawnee State and Salem traded points until the teams were deadlocked at 24-24.
Hghlighted by blocks from Reida and McInnis and a kill by
Jalynn West, Shawnee State closed the set on a 3-1 run to win, 27-25, and take the match, 3-1.
Bears by the Numbers
Kaylee McInnis led Shawnee State with 14 kills, while
Bree Hicks added 10.
Jalynn West posted 23 assists, while
Cally Carpenter recorded a season-high 20. Carpetner co-led the Bears with two service aces, alongside
Whytney Faulkner.
Graci Claxon tallied a season-high 22 digs.
