CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The women's track and field program at Shawnee State utilized a top-15 effort from Olivia Cisco and seven personal best times overall to post a highly competitive outing during Friday's competition at the Charlotte 49er Classic, which was held at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center in Charlotte, N.C. Friday evening.
Shawnee State, who is scheduled to compete on the second and third days of the 49er Classic, got a stout 17:48.49 from Cisco, who outran nine NCAA Division I competitors from Charlotte, UNC-Asheville, and Mercer (Ga.) in the invite alone -- and 21 overall between the 5,000 meter invite and 5,000 meter open events. Cisco was the only NAIA runner in an invite field stacked with NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II harriers.
The Bears also got strong outings in the open event, as Jessica Elick (18:44.99), Beth Middleton (19:42.85) and Sydney Reed (20:16.05) finished 13th, 25th and 30th, respectively. Elick ran nearly 45 seconds faster than her previous personal best in the 5,000 to head up a performance where the sophomore bettered five NCAA Division I runners in the event.
"Olivia had a good day and battled in an elite field," Shawnee State Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Conner Flynn said. "In the same event, it was great to see Jessica Elick run under 19 minutes for the first time for a huge personal best."
In the 1,500 meter run, Kirsten Evans and Amanda Salmons each set personal bests that were nearly three seconds faster than their previous personal bests, nabbing marks of 5:05.35 and 5:19.88 to finish 36th and 52nd, respectively.
In additional events, Alexis Sudderth's 86-foot, four-inch throw in the shot put proved to be a new personal best.
