Evans, Middleton lead SSU women at YSU Mid-Major Meet

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Kirsten Evans and Beth Middleton added in spirited efforts in the 3,000 meter run -- with Evans running the team's best time in the event and Middleton posting a new personal best -- while Sydney Reed's season best time in the 3,000 and a solid time from Amanda Salmons led the Shawnee State women's indoor track and field program at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Meet Saturday afternoon, which was held at the Watson and Tressel Training Site in Youngstown, Ohio.

Evans, who ran an 11:20.65 to lead the 3,000 meter run group, beat three NCAA Division I runners from St. Bonaventure, while Middleton, who defeated two NCAA Division I runners from the Bonnies' camp posted a 11:23.61 in the 3,000 to run nearly 14 full seconds faster than her previous personal best of 11:37.38 last April. Reed, who posted an 11:34.20, collected a 28th place showing for a season best mark.

Salmons, who competed in the 800 meter run Saturday, finished 37th overall in a deep 57-runner field. The Wheelersburg native ran a 2:35.49 in that event.

"Kirsten and Beth had great weekends," Shawnee State Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Conner Flynn said. "Beth logged two indoor personal bests, while Kirsten logged two marks in her debut of the 1,000m and 3,000m, that are both currently top 5 in the River States Conference. Sydney and Amanda competed and showed great racing mentality."

The Shawnee State women's track and field program will be back in action Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 when the Bears participate in the two-day Jud Logan Light Giver Open at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.
