SSU men's tennis drops matches to NCAA D-I Lindenwood, NAIA No. 6 William Woods, NAIA (RV) Missouri Baptist

The men's tennis program at Shawnee State put together competitive efforts against top-flight competition against NCAA Division I Lindenwood (Mo.), NAIA No. 6-ranked William Woods (Mo.) and (RV) Missouri Baptist (Mo.) Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, dropping tight matches in essentially every affair contested while continuing its progression as a program.

Highlights -- Lindenwood (Mo.)

Against Lindenwood, Abubakar Yakabu Lea stood out easily -- notching a massive victory at No. 1 singles by defeating Carlos Rodriguez Gonzales by a 6-3, 7-6 (5-0) count.

Other impressive performances dotted the outing for the SSU men, including Ishamael Dowuona at No. 2 singles, who defeated Lindenwood's Bernardo Henriques by a 7-5 count in the opening set of play before dropping the following pair of sets, and Ivan Wularu at No. 5 singles, who overcame a 6-2 setback in the opening set to Lindenwood's Mattis Lamm to collect a 7-6 victory in the second set before dropping the third and final set by a 10-5 count.

Zayden Rinehart's effort at No. 6 singles included competitive 7-5 and 6-3 margins of defeat to Lindenwood's Ali Lahrichi.

In doubles play, Yakaba Lea and Rinehart posted a strong effort against Lindenwood's Nathan Matsuguma and Bernardo Henriques, falling by a scant 7-5 margin at No. 1 doubles to highlight play on that end.

Highlights -- No. 6 William Woods (Mo.)

Against William Woods, Yakaba Lea and Rinehart again posted strong outings, dropping a tight 7-6 doubles decision that went to a tiebreaker against the No. 1 William Woods doubles pairing of Ben Grumley and Zinovii Nahirniak. Yakaba Lea also took six games across two sets from William Woods' No. 1 singles talent, Vaclav Schneider, in a well-contested 6-4, 6-2 battle against the All-American Midwest Conference talent.

In exhibition play, Adam Stanley and Aiden Pine defeated William Woods' Alexander Patrick and Asher Stevens by a 6-3 margin in doubles action.

Highlights -- (RV) Missouri Baptist

Shawnee State was competitive throughout in singles play against (RV) Missouri Baptist at every level, with the following action occuring:

  • Yakaba Lea taking Missouri Baptist's No. 1 singles talent, Luca da Silva Ebenriter, to a scant 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 setback.
  • Dowuona posting a respectable showing of his own at No. 2 singles against Missouri Baptist's Youssef Ihab Mokhles, taking the second set 7-6 (7-2) before falling by 6-2 and 6-3 margins in the first and third sets of play
  • Wularu taking seven games from Missouri Baptist's No. 5 singles talent of Lucas Kzam in a match that Kzam ultimately collected, 6-3 and 6-4
  • Keenen Lambert collecting a 6-4 triumph over Missouri Baptist's Alberto Pros Cieker at No. 6 singles in the second set
  • Zinedine Arva Purbo and Adam Stanley dropping tight 8-7 (8-6) and 8-4 margins to Danijel Blagojevic and Britton Struewing in exhibition play
