Overwatch Claims First Spring Win Over GVSU

After a difficult start to the season, SSU Overwatch picked up their first win of the spring NACE season against Grand Valley State University last night. They claimed the match with a clean 3 – 0 sweep.

Game one saw a strong start from the squad after they took Arctic Peninsula 2 – 0. The Bears had a large lead with elimination count, led by tank player Gaberiel Martinson (gamertag: Happy). The sophomore was credited with 25 eliminations—over three times that of GVSU's top player. He also claimed top damage with 6,870 as Ramattra. Top healing in the overall game went to Logan Betz (gamertag: DotBetz) who had 6,392 as Baptiste. The support player also claimed top assists with 21.

Game two took the squad to one of SSU's strongest maps: King's Row. After a powerful offense and clean defense, the Bears took the map 3 – 1. Top eliminations went to Benjamin Palmieri (gamertag: Bas1lisk) who was credited with 34 as Bastion. Martinson claimed top damage over his teammate with a whopping 16,439. The tank player had mitigation numbers nearly matching that at 15,852. Betz once again claimed top healing and assists with 19,396 and 34, respectively.

The final map was played on Suravasa, where the squad took a clean 3 – 0 map win. The Bears saw their only play of the game on the final map, going to Palmieri as Tracer. Zach Ellis (gamertag: FireRaptor) stepped in for Zach Smith (gamertag: zsmitty2020) on the DPS role this game. Martinson and Betz tied for top eliminations this game with 23 each. Betz also tied with co-support Gavin Jones (gamertag: Zephyr) on top assists. Both players earned 17.

Next up for Bears Overwatch is another NACE season match. They face North Carolina State on March 12 beginning at 7:00.
