Yesterday, SSU Overwatch was swept by Stony Brook in their first match of the spring NACE season. Despite the Seawolves being stronger on paper, the Bears kept each round close.
Game one was a control game on Lijiang Tower. Shawnee State claimed the first round but was unable to win the best-of-three map, dropping the final two rounds to Stony Brook. Zach Smith (gamertag: zsmitty2020) earned top eliminations on the Bears side, claiming 18 of his own. The DPS player was followed closely by teammates Gaberiel Martinson (gamertag: Happy) with 15, with Benjamin Palmieri (gamertag: Bas1lisk) and Gavin Jones (gamertag: Zephyr) earning 14 each. Gwendolyn Bowman (gamertag: Obama) played her supporting role well, with 18 assists to her credit. She also earned top healing overall, with 11,257.
Map two was a hybrid run on the competitive classic King's Row. The Bears defended first, where they struggled to push back the Seawolves. After conceding all three initial points, the squad nearly tied the game on attack. Unfortunately, they only earned two points and failed to escort the payload to its final destination. Martinson earned top eliminations for the SSU side this game, with 29 to his credit. Palmieri and Smith tied closely behind with 26 each. Martinson also earned top mitigation in the entire game by far—the tank player's 22,641 roughly doubled the next highest. Bowman once again earned top assists for the team with 27.
The final map was on the most recently added mode, flashpoint. Competitors fight to capture a series of areas that appear in sequence. The Bears substituted Smith for Zach Ellis (gamertag: FireRaptor), who made his Overwatch debut. The squad conceded the first point before claiming the second. Unfortunately, they couldn't maintain momentum and lost the final two points to end the game. Ellis claimed the top elimination spot for the SSU side in his debut, with 16 to his credit. Martinson earned top damage with 12,822, less than a hundred behind the top overall damage earner. He also had top mitigation with 12,112. Bowman continued to play the supporting role, with 18 assists and 11,937 healing.
Next up for SSU Overwatch is another NACE match, this time they face James Madison on February 6. The action starts at 7:00.
