Esports Recap: January 24 - 30

SSU Esports has been busy as they continue their spring season. Here's a recap of how each team has performed:

MSC Smash Bros. vs. Keiser University 2 - 0 W

This January 24 sweep was a close call for the Bears. Game one was led by Benjamin Moushey (gamertag: Waywardness) who earned two stocks. Teammate Mark Schueler (gamertag: Atlas) entered second to claim three of his own before falling. Anchoring for the unit was Christopher Mowery (gamertag: SpaceMiner) who claimed four stocks and ended the match with only one left in SSU's bank.

Game two was a similar story, with Schueler taking four stocks to lead the charge, followed by one claimed by Moushey. Mowery anchored once more, claiming four stocks and ending the game with two remaining in the Bears' bank.

SSU Super Smash Bros will be back for more on February 9 as they take on Michigan Tech beginning at 7:00 PM.

cLoL League of Legends vs. Northwestern University 0 – 2 L

This January 28 opener was a tough loss for SSU League of Legends. The first 30-minute game saw the squad earn 11 total eliminations, half that of their opponents. Ethan Popp (gamertag: LegendaryEtan) and Zachary Farrar (gamertag: Cpt Wiley) tied for top SSU eliminations with three each. Aaron Allen (gamertag: Turtlestrike) and Chase Minor (gamertag: ArcticWolf) played the supporting parts in this match, earning four assists each.

Game two was a closer 32-minute loss, where the Bears claimed nineteen total eliminations, to Northwestern's twenty. Farrar held over half of the squad's eliminations, with ten total to his credit. Jared Robb (gamertag: Aatreon) followed in second with four of his own eliminations, with two other members earning two and one earning one. Minor held the most assists by far after helping his teammates land the final blow eleven times.

MSC League of Legends vs. University of the Cumberlands 2 – 0 W

In two swift games, the Bears claimed a clean sweep on January 30. Game one took only 19 minutes for the unit to claim 28 eliminations while conceding only five. Twelve of those eliminations were earned by Farrar, who claimed top gold in the match as well with 12,520. Following closely was Allen with nine eliminations. Minor once again showed his supportive skills with thirteen assists for his teammates.

The second game was similar to the first, taking only 20 minutes. The Bears earned a total of 33 eliminations and conceded thirteen. Allen and Farrar dominated the field in this game, with ten eliminations each. Allen also tied with Minor for top assists, with both Bears aiding in thirteen final blows. Allen led for damage dealt as well, dishing out 28,519. He was followed closely by Robb who dealt 22,334.

League of Legends is back in action on February 11 as they face University of Chicago for cLoL. Game time is 4:00 PM.

NACE Rocket League vs. King University 3 – 1 W

This historically competitive match was no sweat for the Bears on January 30. The squad claimed game one with an overtime 6 – 5 win. Four of the six goals were scored by Zach Ellis (gamertag: FireRaptor). The other two goals were scored by PJ Fiscus (gamertag: Fisci25). Playing the supportive role was Dyllan DeBruyne (gamertag: Duckworth), with four assists to his credit. The other two Bears each earned one assist. Game two was 2 - 4 a loss for the squad as they struggled to defend against the Tornado. Both goals from the Bears in this game were scored by Fiscus.

Game three was a 4 – 3 comeback win for the squad. After being down by two goals, the Bears scored four in a row to claim the win. Fiscus began the spree with one goal, which DeBruyne followed with three of his own. Ellis played a supporting role, earning two assists and three saves. The final game was an exciting 2 – 1 win for the unit. After conceding the first goal, the squad rallied to tie up the game with a goal from DeBruyne, before Fiscus scored the winning goal thanks to an assist from Ellis.

Bears Rocket League will be back on February 13 with a NACE match against Siena Heights. Game time is 7:00 PM.
