This past weekend, the Shawnee State Volleyball team faced the Pioneers of Point Park University and the Red Storm of the University of Rio Grande. The Bears played five sets in both matches taking the match against Point Park, but fell just short against the Red Storm.
SSU vs. PPU
The first two sets were dominated by SSU. They won those sets 25-17 and 25-12. The Bears grew their lead after a kill from Kylee Barney, which was followed by back-to-back errors from the Pioneers. Bethany Colling capitalized with a kill of her leading to a Point Park time-out. After the timeout, Haidyn Wamsley added another kill for the Bears. The second set saw Wamsley serve eight straight times, which helped the Bears gain a nine-point gap. The Pioneers never got closer than ten points in the second set. The Third and fourth set went the ways of the Pioneers. The Bears Gretchen Chaney served nine straight times as SSU tried to mount a comeback but fell short. Setting the hype for the fifth set, which was tied at five after a Chaney kill, and from that point on the Bears never looked back. They claimed the game from a Barney kill.
SSU vs. Rio
When the Bears woke up Saturday morning, they were ready to go against their rival Red Storm. The match felt exactly like Friday's match-up as the Bears claimed the first two sets. Early in the first set, SSU had back-to-back-to-back kills from Megan Steele, Barney, and Colling. Shawnee claimed the second set after two kills from Barney, a service ace from Steele, and errors from Red Storm. The third and fourth sets were dominated by Rio Grande. Once against, the Bears found themselves in another fifth set. The set was nothing but back-and-forth with the Red Storm claiming back-to-back points claiming the fifth set.
Shawnee State will be back in action tomorrow evening, as they travel to face the Eagles of Alice Lloyd University. The match starts at 7 PM.
