Bears Split on Weekend: Cochran Get 1000th Dig

This weekend the Bears took on two conference foes as they traveled to the University of Tennessee Southern on Saturday night and then took the short trip to Cumberland University to take on the Phoenix Sunday afternoon. Shawnee State would come out with the victory over the Firehawks on Saturday night, but with a celebration at the beginning of the game on Sunday, SSU would fall to Cumberland.

Looking to start the month of October off with a victory, the Bears travel to Pulaski, TN, to face the Firehawks of UT Southern on Saturday night. The Bears would start the match falling two sets to none and looking like they did not have anything to say. SSU would storm back and win a tough-fought second set behind aces from Makaela Lovely and kills from multiple Bears players. The fourth set would be dominated by SSU, setting up a battle to the finish with the fifth set war. Shawnee would come out with the victory as Senior Emilee Cochran would ace not once, not twice, but three times in a row. That would seal the victory for the Bears in a 3-2 final.

On to Sunday's game, after the short trip from Pulaski to Lebanon, Shawnee would travel to face Cumberland University in their second Mid-South Conference action of the weekend. The game would start with a celebration for the Bears as Emilee Cochran would pass the milestone of 1000 digs over her career here at Shawnee State. That celebration would be short-lived as the game would continue, and the Phoenix would be too much for the Bears to handle and would fall against Cumberland University.

  • Rhoads had 13 digs and 8 kills
  • Kylee Barney had 7 kills on 12 attempts

The Bears will be back in action at home this weekend as they welcome in Freed-Hardman and Bethel University. The first of the two games will be Friday at 6 PM in Waller Gymnasium.
