In three tightly contested sets, the University of Cumberlands were able to string together enough mini-runs to earn a 3-0 match win. The first set was tight throughout, with ties at 6, 10 and 14. However, the Patriots were able to take 19-15 lead and eventually 24-22. A long rally at game point went Cumberlands way and the 1-0 set lead.
The second set was once again close early. The lead went back and forth as the teams fought for control. SSU took a 13-10 lead only to see it tied at 14 and eventually a 14-17 deficit. A Devan Scarberry timeout brought the Bears back to 18-19, but once again the Patriots closed the set strong winning 25-19 to take a 2-0 set lead.
Once again set three would start with both teams trading the lead. The evenly matched play saw the score tied at 10 and 13 before Cumberlands rattled off 3 straight points to force an SSU timeout. The Bears responded with a quick run of their own to tie the score once again at 19. However, set 3 would end as the first two did, with the Patriots able to capitalize on the big points down the stretch winning the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
SSU Volleyball will be back in action November 5th as they host UTS.
