SSU Esports Review: Smite posts sweep of Cincinnati, RL Blue, Overwatch, Hearthstone dominate own proceedings

In a strong week for the entire SSU Esports program, the Smite, Rocket League, Overwatch and Hearthstone programs cleaned up against excellent competition.

Smite notched two strong victories -- including a 2-0 sweep of Cincinnati in its season-opener -- while Hearthstone and Overwatch defeated Illinois Tech and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, respectively and the Rocket League Blue and Gray squads swept all four of their games in various competitions spanning the NACE, TESPA, and the American Video Game League (AVGL) realms.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

NACE -- Rocket League Blue

Shawnee State Blue 3, Lebanon Valley (Pa.) 0 (3-1, 6-0, 2-0); Shawnee State forfeit win over Mount St. Joseph

Another successful day for the SSU Esports' Rocket League unit resulted in two victories, including a 3-0 sweep of Lebanon Valley, Pa. (3-1, 6-0, 2-0 Tuesday evening in NACE action.

With five goals and three saves on his line, Ben Snyder was able to lead the way for SSU in the victory. Snyder added in an assist during the match, and scored a match high 689 points in Game 2, along with a match high 1,251 points overall, by notching three of his goals in the 6-0 win. Fiscus added in a 490-point outing in Game 2 while notching four assists and added in four goals en route to 1,203 overall points, while Richard Randolph posted a 378-point Game 2 showing on his way to two goals, four assists, a save and 1,023 points in all.

NACE -- Rocket League Gray

Marietta 3, Shawnee State Gray 2 and Milwaukee School of Engineering-Whataboo Esports 3, Shawnee State Gray 1

The SSU Gray squad gave two competitive units in Marietta and MSOE-Whataboo runs for their money, falling by 3-2 and 3-1 margins Tuesday evening in NACE competition.

Kolton Bauer (Gamertag: K-Unit) and David Lindamood (Gamertag: Lindamood626) combined for seven goals against Marietta while Bauer made seven saves against MSOE-Whataboo in the two losses. Stephen Good (Gamertag: Spy) combined for Lindamood to post five goals in the match.

Monday, Oct. 19

NACE -- Overwatch

Shawnee State 3, Milwaukee School of Engineering 2

The SSU Overwatch squad continued its strong season and got back in the win column Monday evening by grinding out a tough 3-2 battle against the Milwaukee School of Engineering Monday evening in NACE competition.

In Game 1, Shawnee State took the victory on the Nepal map after getting 90 combined eliminations from Nicholas Ludowese (Gamertag: LordLud), Lane Knauff (Gamertag: Phinnick), Hayden Ridgeway (Gamertag: HRPrime), and Alena Bruening (Gamertag: ALilTurtle). The pair also combined for 43 objective kills and 22,920 hero damage in the victory.

After falling behind 2-1 in losses on the Junkertown and King's Row maps, SSU stepped up their performances and closed out the match with two resounding victories in Hanamura and Busan.

Knauff, Ludowese and Ridgeway combined for 71 eliminations, 48 objective kills, and 30,438 hero damage in Hanamura while the quintet of Bruening, Knauff, Ludowese, Ridgeway and Henry Gresham (Gamertag: TENTACULAR) notched 99 eliminations and 39 objective kills together to close the deal on the Busan map.

Demetrius Reynolds (Gamertag: Deme72) and Noah Hall (Gamertag: CNNNFDDR) all contributed heavily to the five-game victory.

Saturday, Oct. 17

AVGL --Smite

Shawnee State 2, Cincinnati 0

In a dominating and well-balanced effort, the Shawnee State Smite program opened its season in AVGL competition with a blowout victory over Cincinnati, leaving no doubt as to who the better team was in its wake.

Between the two games, Blake Moore's (Gamertag: Flakeee) 13 kills and Benjamin Ludowese's (Gamertag: Thetwins30) 12 kills led the charge for Smite, while Nicholas Ludowese (Gamertag: LordLud), Will Shope (Gamertag: DummySlicc), and Elijah Scovel (Gamertag: TheMightyShrimp) all posted 10 kills apiece en route to the win. No Cincinnati player had more than five kills by comparison in the contest.

Smite also picked up a second 2-0 victory Tuesday evening, with Benjamin Ludowese notching 14 kills to head up the output over the latter two-game set.

Thursday, Oct. 15

NACE -- Overwatch

Lourdes 3, Shawnee State 0

In Overwatch competition last Thursday, SSU dropped its first game of the year to a strong Lourdes group, 3-1. Ridgeway and Nicholas Ludowese led SSU with 21,605 hero damage done.

Additional Notes

The Shawnee State Hearthstone unit also claimed victory Tuesday evening, notching a 3-1 victory over Illinois Tech in TESPA Hearthstone competition.

Shawnee State's Overwatch unit (Thursday, 8 p.m., Muskingum) and SSU's Smash Brothers squad (Friday, 8 p.m., Shenandoah, Va.) are next up on the docket.
