Bears end season with 3-0 loss to Georgetown

Bowling Green, Ky. – Shawnee State volleyball saw their season come to an end on Thursday afternoon falling to second seeded Georgetown 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-20) in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

The Bears would fall behind early in set one, with Georgetown taking an early 4-1 lead. That lead would stand as the Tigers would keep Shawnee State away before going on 6-0 run with the score 11-8 pull away. The Tigers would finish off the set by trading points with the Bears and winning set one 25-16.

Georgetown would then rally from an early set two deficit to win the second. Shawnee State would take an early 6-5 lead, but the Tigers would go on an 8-2 run to go up 12-8. From there, Georgetown would score six unanswered to widen the gap. Shawnee State's attempts to rally would fall short as the Tigers would claim set two 25-13.

Set three would see Georgetown get up 8-3 early and never look back. The Tigers would hold a lead for the whole set, cruising to a 17-9 lead. Shawnee State would begin a rally at 17-9, going on a 9-3 run to make the score 20-18. However, the Tigers would halt the Shawnee State rally and claim the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Brianna Wiget (SR/Piketon, Ohio) had nine kills to lead Shawnee State on the afternoon. Elaina Davenport (SO/Newark, Ohio) chipped in with 29 assists and Stacia Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Indiana) led all defenders with 14 digs.

Georgetown's Jenny Howell and Ashton Meckle each had 13 kills to lead all scorers.

The loss sees Shawnee State finish the season with a 9-24 record. Georgetown improves to 21-3 and moves on to the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Mid-South Conference Honors

Shawnee State had two players named All-Mid-South Conference at Wednesday night's Mid-South Conference Volleyball Banquet. Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) and Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) both received second team nods for the 2017 season. SSU also had Brianna Wiget, Madison Knipp (JR/Beaver, Ohio) and Elaina Davenport receive Mid-South Conference All-Academic awards for maintaining a 3.25 cumulative GPA while playing for SSU.
