Portsmouth, OH- Shawnee State volleyball was defeated at home by 17th ranked Georgetown on Monday night, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-15, 25-22).
The Bears fell in the first set 25-18 against the Tigers despite jumping out to a 6-1 start. Shawnee State managed to stay ahead until a Georgetown rally tied the set at 13. The Bears scored 5 more times but were unable to hold off the Tigers. Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) led the Bears attack in the first set accounting for 4 kills.
The Tigers started the second set off strong taking an early 5-1 lead before an attack error and Christina Shelton kill began the Bears comeback. Shawnee State took their first lead of the set thanks to a Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) kill that gave the Bears a 9-8 advantage. Georgetown maintained their advantage until an attack error followed by two SSU kills drew the set even at 20. Elaina Davenport (SO/Newark, Ohio) stepped up with an ace and two kills to put the Bears up 23-20. With 24 points, Davenport setup Tatum Wise (FR/Canal Winchester, Ohio) for the game winning kill ending the second set 25-20 Bears.
Tied at 1-1 the third set saw a resurgence from Georgetown as they took a 13-4 lead early. The Bears fought back scoring five unanswered thanks in part to three Tyanna Smith kills. The Tigers proved too strong for the Bears remaining ahead and winning the set 25-15
The fourth set was closely contested until the Bears fell behind due to four straight Georgetown kills, putting the Tigers up 11-7. Shawnee State did fight back coming within two points of a 15-13 Georgetown lead. Despite SSU's efforts, Georgetown continued to dominate the rest of the set winning 25-22.
With the loss, SSU volleyball fall to 6-14 on the season, 1-7 in conference play. The 17th ranked Tigers improve to 12-2 with a 7-2 conference record on the season.
Shawnee State volleyball will play again Tuesday, October 10 against #24 Campbellsville University. That match is set to start a 6pm.
