RICHMOND, IND. (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State volleyball team finished the second day of the IU East Red Wolves Tournament with a pair of losses to the host team.
In the first game of the day the Bears were locked in early grabbing victories in the first two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-11, but the Red Wolves quickly responded taking the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 15-9 and defeating the Bears 2-3.
Lauren Helbig (SR/Mansfield, Ohio) led SSU in kills, finishing the match with a total of eighteen. Deanna Smith (JR/Riverview, MI) put in a strong showing compiling 37 assists in the match to go along with four kills, two blocks and two aces, while Brianna Wiget (JR/Piketon, Ohio) contributed 11 kills. Rhyanna Day (SR/Beaver, Ohio) had a team high 23 digs in the match.
In the consolation match, the Bears faced the Red Wolves again and took them to five sets before falling in the match. Shawnee State lost the match by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 14-25, 15-11.
Helbig had another strong game at the net, compiling 20 kills and three blocks. Wiget registered 12 kills in teh match to go alogn with 16 digs, while Miranda Clark (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) added 11 kills and two blocks. Smith had 41 assists and 14 assists in the match. Day and Madison Knipp (SO/Beaver, Ohio) each contributed a team-high 22 digs for the Bears.
Helbig was named to the All-Tournament Team.
