Lebanon, Tenn. – Shawnee State volleyball fell on the road on Saturday, losing to Cumberland 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 26-24) in Mid-South Conference play.
Cumberland led most of the way in the first two sets, with Shawnee State making late rallies in both sets. The Bears led for most of the third set, holding a 24-22 advantage late. The Phoenix would make a late run to win the set 26-24 and the match.
Lauren Helbig (SR/Mansfield, Ohio) continued her excellent season by getting 14 kills and hitting .619 for the match, adding in two assisted blocks. Deanna Smith (JR/Riverview, MI) had 33 assists, and McKenzie Huff (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) led the Bears with 20 digs.
Cumberland were led by Mikayala Wickham with 13 kills, and Amanda Worrell added 11.
With the loss, Shawnee State falls to 3-18, and 0-11 in the Mid-South Conference. Cumberland improves to 14-10, and 4-6 in the league.
Shawnee State are next in action on Tuesday, October 11th when they host conference rival Pikeville. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
