Portsmouth, Ohio (Tennis) – Shawnee State claimed victory over Saint Catharine College on Tuesday afternoon, going 4-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles at Portsmouth Tennis Academy.
At the No. 2 spot for singles, Emily Waugh (FR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) came through for the Bears by defeating SCC's Hannah Lewis in two 6-1 sets. Nicole Harmon (FR/Shelby, Ohio) joined Waugh in singles victory, besting Lydia Tackett in both sets 6-0 at the No. 3 spot.
St. Catharine claimed two victories in singles competition as well. In the No.1 spot, SSU's Shelbie Wulfekamp (SR/Maysville, Ky.) came up short to Erin Pigman, who claimed the win with two 6-0 sets. Mara McGee (FR/Baltimore, Ohio) also came up short, losing to Anna Burdett in both sets 6-1 at the No. 4 singles match.
St. Catharine only traveled with four players to Portsmouth for the competition. This gave Shawnee State the two walkover wins at the 5th and 6th singles spots, as well as at the No.3 doubles spot.
The teams would each claim a win in the two doubles contests. For SCC, the combination of Pigman/Burdett was too much for SSU, as Wulfkamp/Boggs fell short at 8-3. However, Harmon/Snyder would answer back for the Bears, who also won 8-3 over Lewis/Tackett.
Shawnee will take their momentum to their matchup Wednesday, where they will host the University of Pikeville at 1:30 p.m.
