GEORGETOWN, Ky. (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State volleyball team fell down early in both the second and third sets, and let a close game slip away in the second set, as the Bears fell in straight sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) to No. 16 Georgetown College on Tuesday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
The Bears (10-7, 3-3 Mid-South) struggled to form any type of momentum throughout the three sets, collecting just 20 kills while committing 19 attack errors. Christina Shelton (SO/West Union, Ohio) led the way with six.
The Tigers (13-4, 6-1) used an early 7-2 run to open the match, taking control from the outset. Shawnee State cut the deficit to 7-4 after a service error and a kill from Paige Zelich (SR/Grove City, Ohio), but would never get any closer. GC led by as many as 10 en route to the 25-17 win.
SSU looked much more focused out of the gate in the second set, as the Bears played all the way to a 10-9 advantage. It was then three straight attack errors from the visitors that put Georgetown on top for good. The Tigers would go onto score 16 of the next 20 points in the 25-14 win.
The third set emulated the first as Georgetown jumped out to a 7-0 advantage – a hole from which the Bears could never recover. SSU scored The rest of the frame would be played at a much closer 18-16, though the early lead was too much to overcome.
Georgetown was dominant on the attack throughout the contest, hitting .360 as a team. The Tigers were led by Caraline Maher, who recorded 13 kills and a .647 attack percentage.
Madison Smith (JR/Orrville, Ohio) notched a team-high 12 digs for the Bears while Devan Scarberry (SR/Franklin Furnace, Ohio) added 10 assists.
Shawnee State is back in action Friday when the squad heads to Williamsburg, Ky., for a Mid-South matchup with the University of the Cumberlands. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
