PORTSMOUTH – Volleyball fell 3-0 to No. 18 Georgetown Saturday (25-13, 25-17, 25-16). The Tigers(16-4, 7-1 MSC), who are also the defending MSC Regular Season Champs, put on hitting clinic against the Bears (9-7, 3-5 MSC) in the straight set win. The match was also the team's Alumnae Game where former players and coaches were welcomed back.
The Tigers hit .400 or higher in each of the three games and killed a total of just 39 of their attempts against just errors, including none during the third and final game. Rachel Eubanks led the Tigers with 11 kills on the afternoon while Caroline Maher added nine more kills. Georgetown also blocked nine SSU shots. Ashlee Howe finished with a team-high six (two solo, four assisted) blocks while Eubanks added five more block assists.
The Bears finished the match with 20 against 11 hitting errors for the match. Tiffany Jackson led all hitters with six kills while Paige Zelich added five more. Hannah Gephart led the team with 12 assists while Bonnie Huesing added seven more.
Defensively, Carly Mazza led the Bears with 10 digs while Kirsti Yates and Hannah Gephart added eight and seven, respectively. As a team, the Bears were only able to block two GC attacks on the day.
Volleyball's will now have a couple of days off before a very busy upcoming week. Next Tuesday and Thursday, SSU will be at home against Bluefield (7 p.m.) and Pikeville (6 p.m.) in a pair of MSC matchups. That weekend, the squad will head to Indiana Tech for the Liz Lykowski Memorial where they will compete in four different matches spanning Friday and Saturday.
