Volleyball Downed by Rio Grande, 3-0

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Volleyball handed Rio Grande a loss earlier in the season on its home court. Tuesday night, the Red Storm (15-7, 6-2 MSC) returned the favor on its home court as they dropped the Bears (17-7, 6-2 MSC) in three sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-18). The two schools now find themselves in four-way tie with Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson for second place in the conference.

On a positive note, Tuesday was a night for the record books as senior Alex Pohl totaled four blocks. She now holds the school's all-time blocks record with 376. She broke the mark of Kristen Jones, who played for the Bears from 2000-2003.

During the match, the Bears attack committed 23 attacking errors. This led to just a .042 hitting percentage for the match. In the opening set, the Bears 10 kills equaled their 10 attack errors. In the second (8 kills, 6 errors) and third (9 kills, 7 errors) sets, the Bears had just two more kills than errors.

Kelsey Bielanow led the team with six kills over the three sets. On her record-breaking night, Pohl added five more kills to the team's efforts. Ashley Galbraith, Tiffany Jackson and Paige Zelich each tallied four kills in the loss. Hannah Gephart assisted on 10 of those kills, while Carly Mazza added eight more from her setting position.

Six different SSU players, including Pohl, recorded at least one block in the match. Kirsti Yates finished with a team-high eight digs on the night, while Madison Smith finished with six.

The Bears will now have a week to regroup and refocus their efforts as each of the next four competitions will be Mid-South matchups. The Bears will travel to Pikeville next Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hosting a Mid-South crossover weekend that following Friday and Saturday.
