The Shawnee State Volleyball Team had their chance to win against Cedarville University, but missed opportunities hurt the Bears as they fell in five sets in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. Shawnee State falls to 1-8 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-2.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the first set. Cedarville took the 21-19 lead, but Shawnee State scored three points to take a 22-21 lead. Cedarville rallied with a sideout and ended the game with four straight points to take set one, 25-22.
Shawnee State took advantage of a flat Cedarville team and controlled the next two sets. The Bears' had little trouble as they won sets two and three by scores of 25-15 and 25-12.
In the fourth set, the Bears led most of the set, until Cedarville rallied to knot the game at 19-19. After exchanging points Cedarville took the advantage 23-21. Shawnee State battled back with two points to knot the game at 23-23, however Cedarville answered back with a sideout and then scored another point to win the set, 25-23, and force a set five.
In the final set, Shawnee State struggled as Cedarville opened the set leading 4-0. The Yellow Jackets then went on build an 8-1 lead that the Bears would not be able to recover from. Shawnee State tried to rally and got as close as 10-7, but it wasn't enough as they went on to fall 15-9.
Freshman Paige Zelich led the Bears with 11 kills, while freshman Kelsey Bielanow tallied nine kills and seven blocks for the Bears. Junior Holly Tobias and freshman Abbi Morrow each recorded seven kills. Sophomore Hannah Gephart tallied 30 assists and had 11 digs. Sophomore Kirsti Yates led the Bears' defense with 19 digs, while junior Jessica Winkelman added 17 digs in the match.
Hannah Wagner led Cedarville with 13 kills and three blocks. Stephanie Rogers and Amanda Bell added seven kills apiece. Rogers added six blocks on the night. Maddie Anderson set up 23 assists for the Yellow Jackets. Defensively, Cedarville was led by Kara Yutzy's 20 digs, while Lauren Williams and Heather Kirkpatrick added 17 and 12 respectively.
Shawnee State opens conference play this Friday as they travel to the University of Pikeville. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday, the Bears' travel to UVa-Wise, for an 11:00 a.m. start. Shawnee State returns home on Tuesday, September 13 as they host West Virginia Tech. The non-conference match set for 7:00 p.m.
