Shawnee State falls to Lindsey Wilson

The Shawnee State Volleyball Team fell to the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College in four sets on Tuesday evening. Lindsey Wilson won by score of 25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16. Shawnee State falls to 8-15 on the season and 3-4 in the Mid-South Conference. Lindsey Wilson improves to 22-1 overall and 6-1 in MSC action.

The Blue Raiders took control early in the first set. Leading 6-5, Lindsey Wilson scored four straight points and never trailed the remainder of the set, taking the opening set 25-17.

In set two, both teams exchanged points to start the set. SSU Kelsey Bielanow tied the set at 8-8 with a kill, but the Blue Raiders went on an 8-1 run to lead 16-9. The Blue Raiders built a nine point lead and won 25-16 to take a 2-0 advantage.

Shawnee State came out swinging in the third set. The accumulated 17 kills with a .385 hitting percentage and never trailed. Lindsey Wilson got within two, 16-14, with a kill by Sarah Anderson, however back-to-back kills by freshman Paige Zelich and a single kill by junior Holly Tobias extended the Bears' lead to 19-14. After exchanging points, Lindsey finished the set with consecutive errors, giving the Bears the 25-19 victory.

In the fourth set, tied at 4-4, the Blue Raiders went on a 5-1 run to build a 9-5 lead. Shawnee State played from behind the rest of the set and trailed by as many as nine as they went on to fall 25-16.

Bielanow and Zelich each had stellar nights at the net for the Bears. Bielanow accumulated 12 kills with only one error in 29 attempts, while Zelich had 11 kills with one error in 18 attempts. Junior Alex Pohl added eight kills in the game. Sophomore Hannah Gephart handed out 42 assists in the match, to go along with four kills and six digs. Sophomore Kirsti Yates led the Bears' defense with 23 digs and sophomore Courtney Rowe added 14 digs.

Shawnee State travels to the SCAD Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Bears open play with Embry-Riddle on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
